2. The Opportunity

There is currently a unique window of opportunity, politically and ecologically, to determine the fate of this beautiful animal.

At the beginning of its mandate, the BC government promised to “lead the world in sustainable environmental management”… bar none”.

Today, the BC government is in the midst of a consultation and decision-making process that will determine the future of mountain caribou in this province for generations to come – including whether mountain caribou have a future at all.

The vast majority of British Columbians want to see mountain caribou – and their critical old-growth forest habitat - protected. A 2006 public opinion poll by Strategic Communications showed that a full 86% of British Columbians feel that “the BC government should protect these areas from logging and other industrial uses in order to ensure the survival of BC mountain caribou for future generations”.

Overheard...

"The decline in mountain caribou did not happen overnight, and neither will the recovery. It will take several generations of mountain caribou before they reach pre-1995 levels. However, together with our partners, we are committed to doing whatever it takes."

The Honourable Pat Bell, Minister Responsible for Endangered Species  (October 19, 2007)
